We spent the first week of the vacation in this rental house on Balboa Island, which is right off Newport Beach in Orange County of California. This is about 30 minutes south of Los Angeles, in a nice suburban area on the beach. I found a steal-of-a-deal on the internet, so we snatched up this house for the week. Balboa Island is only two miles around its perimeter, so we walked/ran around the island several times a week. The main street on the island is full of charming stores and cafes, too, so we loved walking there each day.
There was a "Christmas ships boat parade" several nights while we were there, so we loved sitting on the beach and watching that. The Xmas decorations on the houses on the island are also ridiculous and crazy, so that was fun to see.
One highlight of the week for me was seeing my old roommate from Wake Forest! Her name is Laurie and we had a lovely lunch with her and her family. I haven't seen her in 20 years, but it just felt like we graduated yesterday!
